VICARIOUS TRAUMA & ITS IMPACT ON SERVICE PROVIDERS September 17 | 9 am – 3:30 pm | Trainer: Mary-K O’Sullivan CT Nonprofits, Hartford | Fee: $60
Vicarious trauma occurs when the service provider experiences various
symptoms as a result of their attempts to assist the client. the most
common term used to describe vicarious trauma is “burn out.” Vicarious
trauma can occur swiftly after a single event or can build up over years
as the service provider continues to bare witness to the adversity that
their clients face. The impacts of vicarious trauma are often
unconscious and in that way can be building to a crisis point without
the individual being aware of the damage that is being caused. In this
training participants will:
Explore the signs and symptoms of vicarious trauma in themselves and their co-workers
Develop strategies to recognize the symptoms early in their development
Take a self evaluation that will assist them in realizing their own level of potential burnout
Construct
a wellness plan for themselves that focuses upon self-care as a
protective factor against vicarious trauma and burnout.
This course will focus on federal regulations regarding the
confidentiality practices required in the treatment of both substance
abuse and co-occurring disordered clients. Requirements and exemptions
will be addressed to include HIV/AIDs status, duty- to-warn issues, and
HIPAA requirements.
